Talk to Me

Director: Mark Craig

Synopsis

In 1985, Mark Craig bought an answer machine. He then kept every message it recorded… for 20 years! Talk To Me is a personal life journey from long-haired graduate to grey-haired middle age, conveyed entirely by real answer machine messages recorded over two decades. Visuals comprise a large collage of photos and ephemera all shot in one continuous take.

About the director

Mark Craig

After graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester with an honours degree in Graphic Design, Mark Craig worked in BBC News & Current Affairs, before spending several years at Channel 4.  He went freelance in 1995, doing a mix of broadcast and non-broadcast directing work that included travel programmes, promos, short films, corporate videos, biographical & historical documentaries; including Jackie Stewart - The Flying Scot (C4) which was RTS nominated for Best Sports Documentary in 2002.

Mark is currently in development with a feature documentary.

According to the filmmakers

“The best AND worse thing about making it was that it was just so personal. I’ve never done an autobiographical piece before so that was a hurdle to get over. Why did I want to make it? I knew I’d have something a little different if I pulled it off. It was a cathartic experience re-living the last 20 years of my life, and a bit like being in therapy! There were many hills to climb both emotionally and in the process of getting it completed. The amount of raw material was massive due to the time span involved and that prolonged the edit. And of course tracking everyone down in order to secure releases was a big task also. Getting funding, experiencing that first public screening, attending festivals… these were all high points, and getting positive feedback from audiences and industry people alike is very gratifying. But now I’m very keen to get the next project finished. Watch this space...”
